In the Great Soviet Encyclopedia, chess is defined as "an art appearing in the form of a game." If you thought you could never be an artist, chess proves you wrong. Every chess player has his or her own style and personality on the chessboard. The new chess club at Gaston College Preparatory will enable our students to express themselves in an artistic, competitive way that will build their academic and personal skills.
Studies prove that chess helps improve students' academic performance and life skills, such as: concentration, logical thinking, self-motivation, self-confidence, patience, hard work, appreciation, imagination, and many other valuable abilities that are often difficult for many students to practice in a creative way. My proposed project is the start of a permanent chess club. The chess club is expected to meet at least once a week to learn new skills and practice, but students will be free to rent the chess sets whenever they have the urge to play.
Currently, I am teaching 8th grade Ancient World History at Gaston College Preparatory in rural North Carolina. We are a 5-8 charter school with around 260 students, but we are opening a new high school next year for ninth graders. The new permanent chess club will be open to the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. It is estimated that between 24-40 students will participate in our opening meeting. I am requesting twelve durable, plastic, rollout chess sets, and six competitive time clocks. This will give us a chance to practice with each other and for competitions.
I am extremely excited about the start of our club particularly because it gives me and other faculty members the opportunity to interact with a variety of students of different grade levels in a positive, unique manner. Chess brings people together around the world, in our own homes, and now in our school. One thing I already foresee is the older students teaching the new 6th graders how to play next year. So hopefully, the personalities that are developed and the skills learned will ultimately make each student a more well rounded individual. Thank you very much for your time.
