My Students
I teach third grade at a school in a blossoming neighborhood with a diverse population. Many of my students come from low-income families and are emergent bilinguals. Given those circumstances, there is a need among our students for books that represent the diversity of all of our students.
My students are open minded, curious, scholars As an official International Baccalaureate and STEAM school, we encompass the whole-child learning approach.
Being culturally responsive is essential. Part of that means exposing students to books with a variety of characters, ideas, and values.
My Project
I want to create a classroom in which the library represents the diversity and culture seen in my students. Literature that creates mirrors and not just windows provides a positive self concept for children. Teachers are not only responsible for teaching the skill of reading but also encouraging will and the thrill of reading. My goal is to update my classroom library to evoke that will and thrill! I want my students to find stories that represent their lives, stories that speak to them and that they want to read over and over again!!
