Our high school serves students in 9th through 12th grade with diverse backgrounds and reading interests. Forty-three percent of our students are economically disadvantaged, sixteen percent are students with disabilities, and three percent are English Language Learners. We have approximately 1600 students and maintain a 15:1 student: teacher ratio. We have approximately forty-two percent African American students and forty-two percent white students. Our school is fully accredited.
Our school strives to create an environment that fosters a love of reading by offering a dynamic library with a diverse collection of books available for students.
It is vital that we maintain a collection with current, popular, high-interest books and offer multiple copies of the same title so friends can share their reading experiences.
My Project
The Virginia Readers’ Choice book list offers a diverse selection of current titles that appeal to a wide range of students. With over 1600 students, we want to make sure that every child has the opportunity to check-out and read each title, so offering enough copies of each book is a priority. Students need to have titles available to them that they can relate to and enjoy.
All children are readers; they just need the right books.
Throughout the year, we book talk all of the titles and encourage our students and staff to read the book selections. Some of our teachers incorporate them into literature circles and summer reading projects. We hold a voting party at the end of the year for all those students who read 4 or more of the books.
