Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am the librarian at a low-income, Mexican-American elementary school in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago. The students love to read and explore different genres. Their love of literature and request for new books is palpable. However, due to budget issues, there is little left to fund their requests.

It saddens me as a librarian to ever have to tell a student to go to the public library to find a requested title.

High interest books are needed to nurture and create confident readers. I want my students to have access to a variety of literary genres, styles, reading levels and languages to entice readers of every kind.

The benefits of exploring a variety of genres inspires independent reading, addresses critical thinking skills and fosters lifelong reading. Fantasy books can spark imagination. Historical fiction develops a broad perspective. Realistic fiction provides readers with connections to the real world to develop socially and emotionally. Critical thinking skills are honed by studying the lives of influential citizens and their biographies. Science fiction books stimulate and expose young minds to the world of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).

My Project

Each week of the unit will focus on a different genre. We will begin with biographies and a spotlight on non-fiction text features using the collection of Rookie Biographies. This 15 book collection includes the accomplishments of notables such as Ellen Ochoa, MLK and Betsy Ross.

Students may connect to fictional characters such as homonym obsessed Rain from "Rain Reign," or Nicki Maxwell of the Dork Diaries.

Imaginations will be sparked with fantasy books such as the "[The] Girl Who Drank the Moon" or the villains of Auradon from the Descendants series.

All of these books will broaden students' cultural perspective and create life long readers.
