My students need books, books, and even more books to use at home, as well as a display stand in which to house them.

My Students
My biggest challenge is getting my students to read every day. They are unable to complete this task because they do not have access to books at home. Since many of my parents rely on public transportation, getting to and from the local library can be a challenge.
"Inability to read is linked to poverty, dependence on welfare, unemployment, and crime" (Heart of America Foundation).
All my kids come from low-income families. As part of their daily homework, they need to read. However, many of these kids don't have books at home. A child from a low-income family enters kindergarten with a listening vocabulary of 3,000 words, while a child of a middle-income family enters with a listening vocabulary of 20,000 words. I've funded a class library on my own but my books have become worn over the years. Research has shown that when parents work with their children, the students chances of academic success increase. I am asking for your help in purchasing books for my classroom. I have created a system where students are able to check out books based on interest and abilities. The child is required to read the book and share the story the next day during meeting time.
My Project
"Students who do more reading at home are better, more proficient readers and have higher math scores " (National Education Association). I envision my students checking out these books from their class library, taking it home and curling with with their parents after dinner and engaging in an animated discussion about the virtues of the story. Your help is two-fold, as you will be helping a child to read while deepening the bonds experienced between parents and child. If I can place the resources in the parents' hands, they will be so much more likely to commit to the required 20 minutes of reading time per day.
"The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more you learn, the more places you'll go." Dr. Seuss
