My Project
In my classroom, we do a ton of reading. Whether it is during our modules, where we learn about specific topics and do research, or during choice reading, where students use their reading strategies to read independent books of their choosing, students spend a better part of their day pouring over books for enjoyment and for knowledge. Every week, we also do a book study, where students get together in their book groups and have conversations about the books they read, just like in real life. Sometimes, we even have snack just like in a real life book study.
These book studies usually have a purpose.
Either we study a genre, an author, or a topic. This particular study is on an author and then students are expected to read more than one book from the author to compare and contrast themes, ways of writing etc. Gordon Korman is an author that interwines some science fiction with realistic fiction and mystery. The students can relate and the books are somewhat fun and silly, which the students love. They are fast-paced and adventurous. When students read these books for book groups, they annotate and analyze the books. They work on predicting, asking questions, inferring, making connections, cause and effect, comparing and contrasting, visualizing and looking for figurative language. We use sticky notes to document our thinking and share with the group. I also like giving them choice, which is why there are so many books from the author. I will make many groups based on choice, as I know that is a way to engage students.
