Our school district is urban and high-poverty; every student in my school is qualified for the federal free lunch program. Our district and school lack many of the tools and opportunities that wealthier schools take for granted: textbooks for every child, working lab equipment, computers and Internet access for all students, transportation when trying to attend afterschool tutoring... yet, we somehow still find ways to make the best of our limited resources!
My students are motivated and WANT to learn - most of them will be the first in their family to go to college, and many of them will even be the first to finish high school.
These kids have risen to the challenges that life presents them, and I am determined to help them meet their academic challenges, too.
We're an inner-city school; most of my students don't have any experience in the outdoors. In fact, some of them are quite apprehensive and uncomfortable with the idea of doing anything outside in the "wilderness." Luckily, our school is next to a small ephemeral creek and bottomland habitat where my Ecology, Environmental Science, and Biology classes all get do field studies such as plant IDs, water quality testing, and wildlife surveys. My students began to lose their fears when they were exposed to the natural world through their environmental studies! Students have truly taken ownership of this once-scary, neglected habitat next to the school. They have conducted cleanups, removed invasive species, and recorded the recovery of the stream ecosystem after construction severely damaged the streambed. They love to take photos in the field with my old digital camera, and they have used these photos to create presentations of their studies.
With GoPro action cameras, my students will be able to create documentaries about their environmental projects, and use them to inform and intrigue the school and community alike.
They will record their cleanups, studies, and explorations, and use their videos and photography to create digital stories about the importance of healthy ecosystems. If this project is funded, student documentaries will be shown to the school at large, and be hosted on the school and neighborhood social media accounts. My students will be able to share their sense of wonder and their environmental stewardship with the larger world - and maybe change some other child's mind about the "wilderness."
