My Students

"1, 2, 3...HARD WORK...4, 5, 6...TOGETHER." When you enter our classroom, you will wonder how you could talk the principal into joining my class. There is a sense of urgency. Our mission is: A’o aku, a’o mai. In Hawaiian, that means that we are all leaders. I will lead you, and you will lead me.

I have 23 students- they are all special in their unique ways.

Their love of education goes beyond the four walls of my classroom and the allocated hours of school. They want to find ways to educate people to clean beaches. They want to improve the reading scores of their younger peers so they create books to read to them. They want to come in before and after school so that they get extra help. Many of them do not have any technology at home, so teaching them technology literacy becomes crucial at school. More importantly, they intend to use technology to help others. They have learned the importance of empathy and showing grit. My school is a Title 1 school with a limited resource of Chromebooks.

My Project

My students will be utilizing the Chromebooks to access Google Classroom, utilizing different applications to build their technology literacy. Here are some sample projects they will engage in: 1) Solar System Unit: students will utilize Google Docs to collaborate in teams to develop an interview with a planet, writing in both the language of interviewer and planet; 2) Writer Workshops: students will have the opportunity to review and edit papers from other students; 3) Book Clubs: students will engage in book clubs utilizing Google Groups to participate in forums and engage in deeper conversations about text-related questions.

Many students from underprivileged areas do not have the access to technology until they are in high school.

By the time they begin to learn, they are already competing with students who can create online presentations, develop data through excel sheets, and type a 10-page paper in one night. By donating to this project, you give my 23 students a chance to be leaders of their community: to have the sufficient technology knowledge to graduate from college and come back into their communities.
