My Students
Take a moment to think about your kindergarten experience. Did you just get a feeling of nostalgia, too? Kindergarten was an amazing and fun time that taught you the foundations of reading, writing, and math. My students are getting that same experience, but we are in need of flexible seating that will allow my students to collaborate and take control of their learning path.
The children I teach are energetic, wonderful, hardworking students.
They impress me everyday with their awesome attitudes, and desire to learn. We are a full day kindergarten class at a Title I school. Most of our students qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program. The student population is 33% Caucasian, 26% Hispanic, 12% Asian, 11% African American, and 28% other.
My Project
I would like to add more flexible seating options to my classroom so I can create a classroom full of active, enthusiastic, engaged learners. Various seating options will give my students the opportunity to choose the best style of seating to meet their individual needs.
Students who are expected to sit in a traditional chair all day often become restless and unable to concentrate.
Lack of movement can cause a decrease in attention, fatigue, and lack of concentration in students. The ability to move around will help my students to be more alert and focused. Couches, chairs, and club boards will help create a more comfortable environment that will meet the needs of all of my students.
Flexible seating will also help increase my students' motivation and level of engagement, which will lead to higher academic performance in my classroom. Flexible seating and movement will also increase oxygen flow to the brain, increase blood flow, improve posture and core strength. Flexible seating options will give students the sensory input they may need, specifically students with ADD, ADHD, and/or autism.
I want each one of my students to be able to choose the type of seating that works best for their learning style. If my students are given the power of CHOICE, they will be more enthusiastic and actively engaged while learning in my classroom!
