Mrs. Cimini from Dalton MA is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

Goodbye Passive Learners, Hello Engaged Learners!

My students need interactive notebooks so students and teachers have a visible record of their evolving understanding, developing thinking skills, and the progress they are making toward the curriculum goals and Common Core State Standards. For their interactive notebooks, they will also need scissors, glue sticks, pencils, erasers, and US postcards.

My Students

Student perspective should always come first. It’s my passion to engage students, involve them in ways that they own their learning. 21st century, redesigned, modern classrooms go beyond looking nice, instead, they consider researched, brain-friendly, ready to learn environments.

The physical makeup of the space in terms of actual furniture used to be desks in rows to prepare kids for lines in factories, but our classroom has been transformed; students spend their day preparing for the skills of today’s world with a focus on problem solving, collaboration, engagement, and communication with others; a place where students can personally have a choice and voice in the what, how and why of demonstrating what they've learned.

Flexible, comfortable, user friendly, learning spaces are uniquely nontraditional. Tough questions must be asked. What works for the kids? How do they work best? Do kids like to lay on the floor, or would they prefer a small reading nook? How do they feel in the classroom, then create that space? Students connect to a student centered classroom and teacher when hard work, a growth mindset, goal setting, self efficacy and identity are at the forefront of learning.

My Project

Interactive notebooks increase engagement and promote master learning. The use of interactive notebooks require students to record daily learning goals, to glue in foldable templates, to work with partners, to record what they know about a topic, what they want to know, and what they have learned, a place to make mistakes and fix mistakes, a place for students to personalize their hard work, a place to keep their work organized, and above all Interactive Notebooks give students a sense of ownership and pride in their learning.

To be successful students and teachers need:

Subject area Interactive Notebook Templates/Foldable for teachers and students to use for modeling, practice, and assessment

Individual Notebooks for each subject

Scissors to cut papers down to size and to cut out interactive activities

Glue Sticks to glue resources into notebooks

Storage for notebooks and supplies

Pencils to jot ideas and learning, and erasers to make revisions

US Postcards to be used for Social Studies Interactive Notebooks, a tie-in to our 4th grade curriculum

Magnetic Base Ten Blocks to be used as a teaching tool and model for hands-on student learning and as a model for Interactive Math Notebooks

The "interactive" quality of the notebook redefines how feedback can change the engagement of otherwise passive learners. The skill of seeking and using feedback, while important for all learners, is one that academically at-risk learners definitely benefit from practicing daily.

When students keep Interactive Notebooks, both they and the teacher have a visible record of their evolving understanding, developing thinking skills, and the progress they are making toward the curriculum goals and Common Core State Standards.
