My 4th grade students are amazing little people with a strong desire to learn. They have bubbly personalities, amazing ideas and the sweetest smiles you've ever seen.
As a teacher in a Title I school, some of the students I serve come to school on a daily basis, carrying much stress from home with them.
Stress for many of these students includes: speaking a language other than English as their main language, not having enough food to eat, being afraid of situations going on in their neighborhood, or mental illness suffered by either them or their family members.
Despite the challenges these students come to school with, they come each day and try their best to succeed and grow, all with a smile and a positive attitude.
These students are active, vocal, engaged, and determined to achieve and do their best.
My students want to be teachers, doctors, scientists, and more when they grow up. They don't let anything hold them back in their dreams and persevere against all odds.
My Project
My students need to move in order to stay focused. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. With the requested items we will remove some of the traditional chairs and replace them with flexible options.
For example children can sit in a beanbag chair or wobble chair while they get cozy with a book, or students can choose to move from their desk and sit with on a mat with a lap desk.
These options help students move freely, maintain focus and continue learning at their own comfort. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them.
I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. They are also less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work.
