Good to Grow: Keeping Our Classroom Garden Plants Thriving
Help me give my students equipment and supplies to keep their classroom garden plants thriving until time for students to take them home for planting.

My Project
Several months ago, my students received a hydroponic gardening system and seeds through a Donors Choose Project. Since then, students have harvested lettuce, transplanted herbs and tomatoes, and "planted" more in our hydroponic garden. Some students took their plants home, but others have left theirs in the classroom. As the plants grow, and as other plants need potting, we find ourselves facing problems I never envisioned: I have plants in unlikely places, and although I have two large windows, the direct sun only reaches a few plants. We must constantly switch plants around. Some are getting "leggy," and, sadly for their owners, others have given up the fight altogether. We also need potting soil for the two dozen plants that will soon need potted so that another group of students can plant.
My students love watching their plants grow, and they take pride in harvesting lettuce, clipping basil, and watching tiny tomatoes ripen; this project will allow them to pot and nurture more plants and free up space in the hydroponic garden so that another group of students can start plants of their own.
The shelf and grow light will keep plants thriving until students can take them home or to our community garden when the weather warms and the danger of frost ends. The rolling shelf will allow us to rotate plants easily to face the window by just rotating the shelf, and if we need to open the window or pull the shade, the shelf can just be rolled away. The potting mats will keep soil from falling to the floor; it can be reused, and our room will be cleaner, too.
