Mrs. Cogan from Cleveland OH is requesting classroom basics through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a variety of classroom supplies that we either don’t get enough of at the start of the year or just don’t get at all.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are full of energy and enthusiasm for learning. They all come from at-risk homes where they are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. 100% of the students that I teach receive free breakfast and lunch daily. Many of them are being raised in single parent households. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with a safe, inviting environment where they can meet their highest potential.
My students aim to please you and look to me for love and support in their learning, whether it is a challenge or a strength.
Many of my students don’t bring supplies in at the start of year and with these writing tools and supplies it will help give my students what they need to keep working in literacy and writing. We use writing paper and pencils everyday during our Daily 5 literacy stations and when writing drafts and final writing samples. During our small group guided reading, students use post it notes to record words they may not know or “ah-ha’s” they come across in their reading.
Also, my students range in reading levels from beginning of first grade level to beginning of 4th grade level, which means their needs differ.
My struggling readers are working on building words using letter tiles or magnetic letters that we don’t have complete sets of currently. The magnetic letters will be key to making words and are in an easy to use case that differentiates vowels and consonants by varying colors.
Students use the computers to work on literacy programs at their level but can’t do so without the use of headphones to listen to the content.
In the area of math, my students are working hard to improve fluency with basic multiplication and division and flash cards will be used during centers to continue to help them. Lastly, we are getting to the heart of cold and flu season and it is important that I keep my kids healthy and well enough to keep coming to school. The Lysol wipes are to help sanitize and keep our classroom learning environment clean and germ free. These supplies may seem basic, but they are essential to our learning and well being!
