My students need a warm, full night of sleep! They need a blanket, pillow, warm pajamas, slippers, bonnet and a nightlight to ensure they are in great shape to learn in the morning!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a Special Education Center High School for students ages 14-19. Our amazing program is located in Detroit, Michigan. We have three wings that serve students with Autism, Cognitive Impairments, and Severe/Multiple Impairments. We service students from the entire City of Detroit. Our school has 204 beautiful, young people with varying strengths and weaknesses. Their backgrounds are as diverse as their abilities. I have students whose parents are my colleagues and students who live in boarded up houses. Some come from two-parent homes, and some come from three different homes.
We are all unique, but we are definitely a family here.
My Project
There is almost nothing more important to a good education than a full night of sleep. In fact, over time, signs of sleep deprivation can actually mimic symptoms of various learning disabilities, and significantly interfere with a child's education. When a child is raised homeless, in transition, or in poverty, as many of mine are, things like cold due to no heat, multiple children in one bed, no mattress, and parents working all hours of the night are just some of the factors that can contribute to a terrible night of sleep. Also, several children with disabilities in one home, loss of bedding due to multiple moves, hunger, no pajamas, or dealing with medications can be contributing factors.
There is nothing worse than being cold at night while trying to sleep.
That is something that we can change. We can help when there is no heat, ill-fitting PJ's, and worn out blankets. With your help, I would like to provide my students with brand new, comfortable, soft, fluffy pillows and blankets, as well as a new pair of warm PJ's and house socks, and a nightlight. I believe that these things will help give them some warmth and comfort this coming school year and help them to get an excellent, full night of sleep.
