My Project

Our students love activities that connect with their units of study! Next school year (2024-2025), our 4th and 5th grade students will embark on an inquiry into migration, with an emphasis on the California Gold Rush. Through this unit, they will learn why people migrate, the challenges that come with migration, and the economic impact on various groups of people regarding migration. Along with the concept of Migration, students will learn of the California Gold Rush and how it helped to form the state we live in.

The "Gold Rush" Unit is always a hit with our learners!

As a culminating activity for this unit, students will be participating in an immersive experience where they will learn firsthand of the difficulties the "49ers" faced when searching for gold. The collapsible dog pools will be used to stage a station of rocky soil where students will pan for "gold". The associated iron pyrite will be a joyous find whether it be small flakes or larger chunks, both of which students will be able to take home to share their collection story with their families.

Please note, the quantity of iron pyrite, tin "gold pans", and pools in this project will serve our entire 4th/5th grade population of approximately 100 students. The collapsible dog pools will allow for storage of these items so they may be used in subsequent years.
