My Students
I teach in a low income, high poverty area. Our school is located in an urban neighborhood in New York City, 85% of our students are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches. The students are served breakfast & lunch. Our students rely on the school meals for their daily source of nutrition. The school services many homeless students. These students live in transient shelters. The homeless students have poor nutrition, resulting in poor health and are frequently absent. We have several special needs students in our class receiving special services.
There are 18 students, of different ethnic backgrounds and for many, this is their first school experience.
We have 8 students who do not speak English. The students speak Creole, Arabic, and Spanish. The students are African American, Haitian, Latino and Arabic. For the majority of the students, this is their first educational experience. Many of them have not heard stories being read aloud and do not have educational toys at home. The students come to my classroom to a place where they are comfortable: socially & emotionally.
My Project
My classroom needs a CLEAN rug. The rug is our community space where we gather for mini-lessons, story time, independent reading and quiet time. The rug will make our classroom, which is housed in the BASEMENT of the building into a warm and cozy sanctuary. The rug will be a place to gather the young students for circle time. Students won’t question where to sit and won't spread out very far because the rug becomes the destination.
A CLEAN rug will promote mental well being where we sit together for close companionship and comradely sharing of our interests and learning; it is the space where we create adventures within the old brick building in a hectic urban setting.
The attitude of the children changes completely the moment they set foot on the rug. They are calmer and ready to share out with one another.
The rug offers versatile seating with a bit of a cushion. It will buffer the noise and make the room feel quieter, even amongst the chaos. Rugs help with noise reduction, absorbing sound, rather than throwing it around. A rug promotes warmth, comfort and care. In an early childhood classroom, it is a necessity to steam clean & shampoo the rug before the start of the school year.
