This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I want my classroom to be a place students WANT to come every day, not HAVE to come every day. Aside from their parents, I spend the most time with them. I get to know them personally and academically. Each student is different, each year is different, this is why I love my job. I love being able to figure out what makes them excited to come to school every day, which makes them learn, and how I can help or possibly inspire them to reach their full potential.
My school is located in South Los Angeles where 100% of the students receive free lunch.
Most of my students speak English as a second language but are now in a mainstream English classroom. They come from a variety of homes and economic backgrounds. I have some parents that are teachers, some that are construction workers, and some that work more than one job to make ends meet. What they all have in common is a desire to give their child the best education possible.
My Project
One of the most powerful teaching tools for a language arts teacher is high interest, good quality literature. This allows the students to apply reading skills they have learned, such as compare/contrast, character analysis, main idea and details, making inferences, etc... to characters and storylines they are connected to. Providing students will books they WANT to read gives them more motivation to complete tasks that might otherwise not be engaging to them.
The language arts program used in my district is majority informational reading, so supplementing their reading instruction with real books of other genres gives them a more balanced literacy education.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
