A typical day in my classroom involves a rich curriculum incorporated with purposeful movement. Jean Blaydes says, "Physical activity grows brain cells, and that cerebellum research tells us, "What makes us move, makes us think."
My school is at a high poverty rate.
Many of the students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Ruby Payne states, "Almost all children of poverty rely on kinesthetic strengths for learning." They need encouragement from the school to show them that learning can be enjoyable and experiences and memories can be made. They need the opportunity to be immersed in rich, creative, imaginative, and realistic literature.
My Project
In previous years, I have had the running conversation with students, "What is the next book you think I should read?" This is the type of question I love getting from my students!
How do you turn a class of 6th graders into lifelong readers?
You provide them with high-interest, engaging books.
Most students can escape into a new world by going to their school library and checking out popular book titles. I want to be able to give my students the opportunity to escape into a world of their own by including new and engaging books in my own classroom library they can check out from anytime throughout the school day, not only when they have library once a week.
This year I’ve really been able to connect with students through reading. Each day, I do a chapter book read aloud. I do a brief book tasting for the students to vote on the novel we read. They love the book read aloud, but I’ve run out of new books to talk about. As a result, I’d love to add fresh titles for my students to continue to get excited about reading.
I have spent a lot of my own money buying books for my classroom. I spend time thrifting and going to garage sales to add to my classroom library. I've reached out to friends and family members asking for donations. I do this in hopes that I can surround my students with books.
Please, help me add new books to my classroom library.
