Good Books Help Brains Grow

My students need books that inspire them to be better readers that are high interest and of varying levels of difficulty.

My Students

At my school we have smart, challenging, creative students most of whom qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Our school is wonderfully diverse. It is predominately Black and Latino, but we have students from all over the world and varying ethnic backgrounds. Our multicultural school provides a culturally rich place for students to learn.

The ability levels of my eighth graders range from a 2nd grade reading level to a college reading level, and our school struggles to acquire the resources we need to help them grow.

Funding for education in North Carolina is continually cut, and we are now at a place where our school struggles to afford basic necessities like paper. My school has been labeled as low performing, but our students are hungry for resources to help them learn and achieve.

My Project

My students are hungry for books that will help them learn and grow. We know that the best way to become a better reader is to read! Unfortunately socioeconomic issues can make it difficult for students to have access to high interest books at home. Well planned classroom libraries help students to have books at their fingertips that capture their interest and make them enthusiastic readers. One study revealed that classroom libraries increased reading time by 60% and that literacy related activities more than doubled! (Neuman, 1999)

We do many activities related to students' independent reading that help them become better readers, writers and critical thinkers.

My students write book reviews, reading response journals, sequels, character diaries, and alternate point of view projects. They study plot, theme, character development, setting, and figurative language. They build skills like summarization, comparing and contrasting, connection-making and improved vocabulary.

Your contribution will help place high interest novels into my students' hands and will help them become life long readers and learners. Please donate today!
