Good Books Are Open Doors

My students need contemporary choice novels for independent and small group literary circle reading! These titles represents diverse voices and times and will transport my students to worlds beyond our small community.

My Students

There's nothing like a beautiful quote to inspire a young person.

My students have been asking themselves questions, and considering the answers, all year!

In my class, we travel all over the world without ever leaving the room.

We do this through amazing novels set in countries my students may never visit, populated with people they may never meet. We do this, and it broadens our small Cunningham horizon to include the whole world. My students are college bound seniors in a small, rural school. We have between 900-1100 students from year to year, with little racial and ethnic diversity. We are a Title 1 School with a high population of lower middle to lower socioeconomic households. It is a true community school though, and we have a vibrant student body.

My Project

These books will open doors for students in my rural community. I want them to hear diverse voices, developing empathy for the world of people around them.

It is through STORY that we can FEEL the pain, joy, hope, fear, and love of people unlike ourselves.

My belief is that these stories allow my students to grow both academically and emotionally. They will prepare them to go into the world and truly SEE other people. What better lesson is there to learn?

These small sets give my students the opportunity to create a tiny book clubs, read, learn, and grow together!
