This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I love to celebrate different cultures and traditions in my classroom. During November we covered the Latino tradition, Dia de Los Muertos. In December we touched upon Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. In January and February I teach and celebrate the Chinese New Year. This coming new year will be extra exciting for me to teach because it's the year of the snake - my year.

Teaching about different traditions and cultures is vital in order to help students be understanding and accepting of everyone.

Every year, I teach about the Chinese New Year and have a celebration. My students are encouraged to wear red, for lunch we order noodles from a local restaurant. We are asking for fortune cookies to have as a dessert after our lunch, the restaurant never gives us enough for all students. I would also like to have Chinese New Year Decorations to decorate our classrooms and use as bulletin board props so that my students can write about the New Year traditions and then display on the board. I always give my kids a red envelope with classroom money, this year I would like to include a small item or toy. My students are very interested in football, so I am asking for teenymates football small figurines (grab bags, tin with figures and gift set). Each student will get a few little figures added to their envelopes. I am also asking for a variety of Photo Booth props and lighting so that my students can use our Photo Booth at the celebration. The red backdrop will be used for the photos.

These items will help my students learn about and understand the beautiful tradition of the Chinese New Year. My students will learn to be respectful and understanding of different cultures, they'll understand that diversity is beautiful.
