My Students
In my room I remind the students it is always a great day to learn something new! I incorporate research based strategies along with environmental studies programs to show my students that reading is important in their lives while they are learning to read for a purpose.
My students are from a suburban school in Pittsburgh.
The school consists of kindergarten through sixth grade, approximately 400 students. Although not a wealthy district, teachers make every effort to utilize technology to energize our students' learning environment. Our district incorporates Common Core lessons to ensure our students are prepared for the future. The children I work with are struggling readers that need to overcome their difficulties with reading. I like to incorporate research based strategies, technology and books about the environment and animals to motivate my students to work harder and reach for their goals. Watching my students grow as readers and realize they can impact their future is priceless!
My Project
My students are involved with the 10,000 Islands Environmental Studies Program. The teaching method is designed to augment student reading capabilities. Students participating in this Program are reading below grade level who must overcome reading difficulties that curtail their motivation to read. The foundation of the program involves jump starting student interest in a current subject through real-time Livestream events and Skype sessions. Students experience team work and become leaders among their peers. Participants spread their knowledge through conversations with classmates and families. The books I requested will assist me in helping students to build fluency and comprehension skills. By reading novels, students gain confidence and are able to make connections between what they are reading and the Livestream events associated with the environmental studies program.
One of my favorite quotes is, "The best part of teaching is that it matters.
The hardest part of teaching is that every moment matters everyday". I know with certainty my students are learning valuable skills that will enhance their reading. In addition, they will someday realize and appreciate they have the ability to shape the future of innocent wildlife and our environment. This type of learning is certainly making every moment matter!
