Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title I campus in the Dallas area home to five hundred plus rambunctious and energetic students. Our staff all work tirelessly to form close bonds with our students and their families and to promote a sense of community. There is a deep sense of love, trust, and loyalty between our students and their families. Although these positive values may be here in abundance, many of our children are falling short in academic areas. As literacy is our key challenge, we are trying to motivate students to love reading and to be life long learners.
And now with COVID requiring many students to learn remotely, these personal connections are needed now more than ever!
We have students from single parent homes and those living with grandparents who are juggling multiple responsibilities in order to care for them. Everyone wants their children to be successful, but many don’t know how to help. Combine that with the fact that 65% of our families are considered economically disadvantaged, move frequently and have poor attendance records, and it's easy to see how these students face an uphill battle just to be on grade level. But we believe in them!
My Project
During the Covid shutdown, many of our students were displaced. Some moved in with close family. Others moved away from our area completely. As they left, students' checked out library books went with them. Others who had to switch to remote learning simply lost their books over the extended time period without access to the building. This unexpected turn of events left our library with gaps in the collection. We have a lot of missing books!
Now, students no longer have access to many of their favorites.
Our nonfiction animal book collection was hit the hardest. Your thoughtful donations will provided our students with replacement books. Normally our budget along with student lost book fees would help cover this cost of replacing books, but this year things are very different. Our budget was cut, and we chose not to collect the lost book fees as students and families had enough to worry about.
This left us without a way to replace the missing books. Thus we are in need of sponsors to help return our favorite animal books to the shelves. Please consider giving!
