Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a charter high school in the urban core of San Diego. We are located in the 9-story central library downtown. While many of our scholars come from the surrounding neighborhoods, many also come from all around the county for our unique school and high-quality education. In addition, being in the library allows for a unique partnership between our school and a community-based organization.

Our school's goal is to engage, educate, and empower but my scholars need to be able to work in an environment that is comfortable and conducive to learning.

69% of our scholars are Hispanic and 14% are African-American. Additionally, 14% are English Language Learners, and 70% qualify for free or reduced lunch.

I teach 10th grade College Prep and Advanced Placement World History. All of my courses are have great kids and I am so fortunate to be their teacher. They are inquisitive and engaging; they are so much fun to be with too!

My Project

After a long semester of academic study in World History, we are finally at the end and we are getting ready to enter the 20th century! What better way than to get students motivated to cover the "biggest war to end all wars" (World War 1!): the movie 1917!

This movie is an opportunity for my students to understand the senselessness, anxiety and horrors of war!

Students will watch the movie 1917 at a perfect time after we just covered the 1800s. The visual effects and suspenseful story line is just perfect for them to understand how terrible the war was and how it set the stage for World War 2!
