My Students
Our school is nestled within a rural community full of families who are diligent in raising responsible and caring children. My 10th-grade students, the proud legacy of their families, are the epitome of curiosity, exploration, and creation. While they enjoy and appreciate traditional methods of reading and writing, they absolutely flourish when provided with supportive technology such as Chromebooks because it is a familiar medium for them to interact with an increasingly complicated world.
Our school enrolls over 2,500 students with 50% categorized as economically disadvantaged and 44% categorized as "Minority: Non-White" (2015-2016 School Improvement Plan Data.)
With such a diverse population, I realize that, although there is no one solution to the complex problem of providing quality education in the 21st-century, integrating powerful educational technology for students within classrooms is a leap in the right direction.
Despite our school being categorized as "high-poverty," it does not lessen the richness of my students' passion for learning nor their desire to have the most current tools and technology to showcase their academic proficiency and personal passions. With local AND national supporters engaged through DonorsChoose.org, I have a sincere belief that our classroom will continue to experience the love shown through philanthropy.
My Project
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the educational landscape and as teachers and learners try to navigate this new reality, the need for effective distance learning strategies and practices has never been more critical.
Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey, renowned authors/educators, have always been reliable sources for professional development for teachers because their strategies and practices are grounded in research; as such, "The Distance Learning Playbook" series is guaranteed to be reliable, useful, and relevant!
Having "The Distance Learning Playbook" series (one version for teachers, one version for assessment, and one version for parents) will help me as a teacher immensely because I can continue to adapt my teaching strategies, my assessment strategies, and construct infographics, etc. for my students' parent so that they can help their child during virtual learning. The sticky notes will help me record my thoughts and interact with the books as I read and reflect. Thank you!
