Going the Distance: Providing Home-Learning Packets for Kindergarten!
Help me give my students a home learning kit filled with exciting materials they can use at their homes. I've also requested a document camera so that when I am live-teaching I can model good handwriting.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from many different backgrounds. The school is a Title I school located in one of New York City’s lowest, socio-economic areas. Some of my students live in the temporary housing near the school.
Many of my student's families were directly affected by COVID-19, several losing family members.
I am currently teaching the fully remote class of Kindergarten. My students are learning through daily synchronous and asynchronous lessons. I commend their parents for trying their best despite a variety of technological challenges.
My Project
The students in my class have been virtual all year. They diligently sign on to live meets as well as asynchronous video lessons. Many of my students live in homes with working parents, siblings sharing devices and unreliable internet service. I try to make my live meets filled with fun and an opportunity for the students to socialize. I lament the classroom I have in the school building filled with resources that the students cannot access.
This project will provide my students with not only basic learning supplies like crayons and scissors, but unique math and literacy toys giving them the opportunity to learn through play.
One example of this is the mini-coil spring ("Slinkies") which will be used to help the children stretch out sounds when decoding words.
Your donation will also help to purchase a document camera to assist in the live meets. Have you ever tried to write with good handwriting on a dry-erase board - holding it up to the computer camera? Let me tell you- it's not a pretty sight! Using a document camera will help me to properly model how to hold a pencil and the correct letter formations. I am also excited to use it for my read-alouds.
