My Students
Do you remember when you had to learn about life science through boring textbooks? I want to expand my children's horizons by bringing science to life in my classroom. I can accomplish this with your help.
I have 24 active 3rd graders who attend an economically disadvantaged school in a rural area, so you can probably imagine that our resources are very limited.
I strive to provide my children with a quality education, and at the same time keep them engaged with hands-on activities. That is exactly why I choose to participate in Disney's Planet Challenge.
With these resources, I would like to explore the life cycles of different organisms, analyze first-hand the life stages of a frog, sowbugs, and plants, use the iPod touch to record our findings and graph our results, and, finally, utilize the creature peeper to get a close up view of our frogs and sowbugs. I intend to use the treasure chest as a reward system for those who are assigned to care for the frogs, sowbugs, and plants on a daily basis. This also teaches a very important concept that I believe is lacking in our society these days - RESPONSIBILITY.
My Project
My students need an iPod touch, amphibian habitat, sowbug culture kit, sprout/grow window, life cycle resources, and a creature peeper for our Disney Planet Challenge. Imagine it! Having a discussion with your children about different life cycles and having puppets as visual aids. Then, actually, allowing the children to raise their own tree frogs, sowbugs, and plants, while recording their observations with the classroom iPod touch. Additionally, they will be receiving rewards for demonstrating responsible behavior while taking care of the plants, frogs, and sowbugs. The children will have the ability to see these organisms close up with the creature peeper. And finally, being able to release the frogs, sowbugs, and transplant the plants into our school garden for our Disney Planet Challenge. That is an outline of my lesson plan, should we receive these materials.
I believe my project is important, because I want my children to experience hands on science, instead of simply reading about it in a textbook.
The only way I can accomplish this is with your help. Through your generosity of donating current technology and proper resources, we can get our children engaged once again!
