My students need a class set of Chromebooks to take them beyond the walls of our classroom to do all the things that will make them successful in this 21st century learning environment.

My Students

My students are seventh grade English Language Arts students. They attend a school in a high-needs, inner-city district in New York state. The school is located in an urban community, with a high rate of poverty. Our district is low on resources and as a result, many supplies need to be purchased by individual teachers. My students are eager and interested in learning new things, yet our district's lack of resources hold them back from learning to their full potential and becoming as engaged in English education as they could be.

My goal is that the students become a community of independent learners and help push each other to grow.

I do my best to teach my students through many different learning styles. We use hands-on tools, technology, books, videos, and more. We work in partners and small groups regularly, and students really work together to help each other be successful. My students come from a variety of home situations, which helps them learn academic and social skills during my English Language Arts class.

My Project

The Chromebooks will be used in my classroom and will allow me to create a hybrid classroom (1/2 week online, ½ week offline). The students in my classroom struggle both academically and behaviorally and are mentally and physically exhausted by the environment that surrounds them every day both at school and at home.

They simply need to be engaged in their learning as many now-a-days are disengaged, disinterested, and disconnected from education, and it is important to begin bridging the gap between education and technology, which will help them to develop the motivation and determination to succeed and enjoy class.

Chrome books will ensure that they have access to resources that aren't ripped up and tattered--the chrome books will get them excited about learning and staying focused. They can do research and create blogs, annotate texts, and share meaningful ideas and examples online. Chrome books alone would help them look up challenging vocabulary in an instant, and increase their inquiry and comprehension skills. These Chrome books will also help them with their writing, by using speech-to-text apps, credible resources, close reading and outside information about topics they find interesting. Most importantly, they will learn to love learning. Additionally, this will allow me to teach students more 21st century-oriented skills that will help them learn how to represent themselves both on and offline in order to be successful in life. Students will have the opportunity to complete their classwork at their own pace because all work will be posted in Google classroom. This will also enable the integration of more technology into the classroom setting and the creation of differentiated stations for group work.
