My Students

Our library needs help! We are a new public school with five successful years under our belt but with a two year old library. Unfortunately, our budget doesn't allow us to purchase many books. We have held fundraisers and gathered used books from people in our community, but now we need your help!

We are a small public expeditionary school with a focus on changing the world.

Our students have written grants to address Malaria in Africa. We have addressed homelessness, both in our city and nationally, culminating with an annual trip to build houses with Habitat for Humanity. Our population of 300 is a surprising mix of students from every economic situation. 41% of our students receive Free and Reduced Lunch, and a 20% of our population are English Language Learners. As a public school there are no endowments to rely on. Though we are trying to expand our students' minds globally, our library doesn't have the resources to support us. Additional texts, especially those from foreign countries, will incite cultural understanding in our students. The small number of books requested will help inspire them to be the best global citizens they can be and to positively shape the community around them.

My Project

Books offer students the opportunity to step into the shoes of people from places all over the globe. Whether it be as a college student roaming the streets of modern Tokyo, or as a young journalist ensnared in a detective story based in post WWII Hungary, the journey will be unforgettable. As a Humanities teacher I see the impact literature can have every day. These 15 books have the power to ignite global understanding in my students. This world is ever shrinking and borders are becoming less of a barrier, learning about countries that differ from our own is essential. Students will venture through other cultures by selecting books from this list as part of their summer reading. All of the texts tie into themes we highlight as a school, such as poverty, war and conflict, the hero's journey, and racism. They help teach themes essential to our world and community and will inspire cultural understanding in the students.

It is necessary to acclimate students to the idea of an increasingly global world.

Because Portland, Maine is small and fairly secluded, this seemingly humble effort will help address culture shock by introducing the students to a variety of nationalities with which they would not normally be introduced. The result? Our students will be more open to people from many different backgrounds and begin to travel the world as international ambassadors. Our goal: Exciting students about the world.
