Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My third grade class is made up of 99% black and Latino students. Approximately 50% of my students will be English Language Learners. These students come from various backgrounds both culturally and economically.
Third grade is such a critical year as they will move from learning to read to reading to learn.
In addition, this will be their first year taking state exams. These students have made great strides as second graders and will continue to do so as third graders.
My Project
Vocabulary development of ELLs is critical to them becoming proficient speakers. Social Language is the language used to communicate socially. Whereas Academic Language, is related to the standards and content areas such as math, language arts, and science. The development and understanding of Academic and Social Language are equally important. It is the complex Academic language, however, that will bridge the educational gap for those who can acquire vocabulary within content areas.
By way of fun, this project intends to have students going BANANAS over vocabulary.
Students need opportunities to use vocabulary, see these words and have ongoing conversations about them. Using the velcro envelopes and lanyards, my students will be able to wear vocabulary words of their choice. These make for great conversation starters and stir up excitement as students look to see what words their teachers or peers have chosen. Banagrams, I Have, Who Has, and Classwords will be used as a center or whole group activity. These games encourage critical thinking, inferencing, using context clues, and FUN with vocabulary!
