My Students

I teach 6th to 8th grade students in beautiful Colorado. My school has a rich history of academic excellence and is one of the highest performing schools in the district. We are part of our district's strand for Technology and Innovative Learning Strand and my students are privileged to learn in a technologically rich 1:1 iPad learning environment.

Within this context, all of my students struggle to keep up as they fight to learn with and about their mild to moderate disabilities.

My Project

I have some students this year who are in need of intensive reading intervention. From my past training, I know that I need to take their learning back to the very beginning of their reading instruction - phonics, sound-letter correspondence, phonemic awareness and basic word building - in order to make real progress on their decoding skills.

Some people believe that by middle school, it's too late for them to become fluent readers.

I don't believe this! If adult learners can still learn to read and do, I believe that my middle schoolers can still learn to read with a systematic, multi-sensory approach. Road to Reading and Explode the Code materials will fit in with the Hill Rap Orton-Gillingham based methodology that I use with all of my middle school students.

This year, my learners are lower than the materials I have. I am seeking Road to Reading and Explode the Code materials to better support them.
