This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every year we train all semester to be able to participate in Special Olympics Soccer. The students love the opportunity to be on an even playing field with peers from all over the district! We make signs, the students learn cheers, and everyone works hard so that they are ready to compete!
My students are urban special education students who all receive free meals because of their family's financial state.
They are used to having very little and making it work. I want my students to be able to do their absolute best, and not just their best with what they have available to them. The school isn't providing us with any goals which denies my students the opportunity to really improve their shooting technique.
My Project
My students will use the requested Soccer Pop-Up Goals to work on their shooting skills. Currently, we set up two small cones, but having an actual goal to aim at would give them vertical space to shoot for as well. The cones get easily knocked down or blow away in the wind. Having goals will make playing the game more real, and not just pretend. My students also spend the majority of their time running after the soccer ball once it has been shot on goal. Having the net to trap the ball will speed up the process of getting the ball back into play.
This project will make a difference by showing my students that they matter.
In the form of more equipment, my students will be shown how important Special Olympics are, and it will encourage them to work hard and try their best. Instead of just using the minimal and dirty equipment we are provided with, my students will see what new and well built equipment feels like. They will get more opportunities to try. That is all I can ask from them, that they be inspired to try.
