In our small community we are blessed to have students eager to learn not only the core curriculum, but also about the betterment of their community and their families. We work as a team in order to achieve one goal: to leave this place, wherever it may be, better than how we found it.
Despite coming from homes that face daily economic challenges, my students come to class with the drive to learn.
They never complain about what they don't have. It is truly amazing to see such young minds able to see all the good the world and our school community has to offer instead of focusing on how difficult their lives are. They are eager to connect the content they learn in class to the world around them, even if they may have limited experiences outside their community. We consistently partner with community organizations to provide our families with STEM nights, environmental awareness, and fun family activities such as movie nights. In addition, our school also provides free tutoring for students struggling in Language Arts and Math after school at no cost to the families. Our school truly believes in providing our students with the best educational opportunities to succeed and we are committed to showing our students that they can be successful at whatever they pursue.
My Project
I am requesting 3 iPads with cases so that my students may create a true digital portfolio of their learning. We are committed to educating our students about sustainability and the environment through hands on experiments, research, and field trips. Connecting their sustainability project this year on Koa trees with digital media will allow them to see the importance of not only preserving Hawaii's natural resources, but also the importance of creating digital content rather than just consuming it. Creating digital content will allow students to demonstrate their learning in various ways and allow them to have a voice and say in their education. Students will be challenged to use different digital media to effectively communicate their scientific findings and analysis to other students, teachers, staff, and community members. The iPads will provide access to high quality resources that students can use and value throughout their educational years.
Students will learn to use technology to create content for others in the community to value and learn from.
It is my hope that students will not only learn about preserving Hawaii's beautiful natural resources but also appreciate the power of technology. Students are often at the receiving end of technological advances. The goal of this project is to transform the traditional roles of student and teacher. The students will effectively use technology to educate others through movies, ebooks, etc.
