My students need math manipulatives such as Magnatiles, Tangrams, protractors and compasses to discover geometric principles, and art supplies to create amazing hands on projects!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students use the Discovering Geometry series, which allows students to discover Geometric principles through hands on learning - but we are short on materials! Many students are not able to "see" a geometric concept without being able to look at it and feel it.
Our school is an urban Public Charter school designed to be a safe and inviting space for all students to learn, regardless of race, class, gender, looks, or sexual orientation.
While our school was started to provide LGBT students a safe haven from bullying, it now seeks to address bullying for all reasons. We firmly believe that students should be able to express their differences, and not only be tolerated but appreciated for them! More than 80% of our students are on Free and Reduced lunch, and more than 1/3 of our students live in group homes. Academically our students range from the bottom tenth percentile to the top tenth percentile. The materials in this project will help challenge students of all abilities!
My Project
The math manipulatives that I am requesting will allow students who struggle to visualize geometric concepts to actually have examples of the materials in their hands. Students will use these to discover geometric rules and formulas in an inquiry based approach, rather than simply being told. The measurement tools will help us to accurately do experiments and test the rules we have discovered. My students will also do creative responses to geometry standards. Students choose how to creatively show what they know about a topic by creating their own project. The art supplies will allow students to express their own individuality.
Math is one of the most critical areas where students are falling behind.
I truly believe the supplies in this project will help bring students' achievement up while boosting their math self confidence!
