Go Away, Big Green Monster! Using Puppets to Retell Stories
My students need puppets and props to retell the story "Go Away, Big Green Monster!" during literacy work stations.

My Students
Kindergarten students need repeated exposure to texts to develop fluency and comprehension. I would like to set up a drama work station for my students to independently practice reading the books that we have read together. I would like to include puppets to aid in the retelling of these stories.
My students attend a public school in Virginia.
We are in one of the largest counties in the state and the 19th most mobile school in the county. This mean that many families move into the neighborhood for a few years and then move away. Because of this, we have a limited amount of time to build the foundations of reading for these students. The majority of the student population is of Asian descent. 35% of the students have limited English proficiency. Puppets and props are a non-verbal cue that can help students with limited English proficiency read and re-tell stories. Puppets are also beneficial to the students who prefer to learn kinesthetically, or with their bodies. The physical touch and manipulation of props will help with retelling stories.
My Project
Imagine two students are sitting at the drama station. One student is reading a story and the other is acting out the story with puppets. Next, the students switch roles. The student who read the story is now acting out the story with puppets.
Go Away, Big Green Monster! is a different kind of puppet. First, the student puts on a green mitten representing the monster's face. The student can add Velcro pieces to put together the monster's face and hair.
Let's Talk! Story Telling Puppets are more traditional puppets. They are character puppets that go on over a student's hand. This set includes puppets for Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Little Pigs, and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. All three of these books are familiar favorites, and staples to the kindergarten library.
Students will look forward to their turn at the drama work station when these puppets are available. They will have fun learning with these puppets.
Your donations will make a difference to these kindergarteners.
They will enjoy using puppets and props to retell familiar stories at the drama work station. At the same time, they will be learning valuable skills like fluency and comprehension.
