Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I like my room loud, I want them talking - discussing - challenging each other. I have music playing in the background. I'm amped to come to work, to share my knowledge and I want to pass that on. We "do" science, not just talk about it. Learning is infectious - and I want it to spread.

I teach Chemistry to a diverse group.

We are a Title 1 school with a high number of free and reduced lunch students, but we also have students coming from wealthy neighborhoods too. Regardless, the kids are all hardworking and determined, especially in a demanding class like chemistry. Many kids are the first to be college bound in their families. They are passionate about school spirit, some are triple threats - art/music/AP classes. We have student athlete scholars and an award winning speech an debate program. These kids work hard - across the broad - and it shows.

My Project

New NGSS standards are pushing for a change in the way science is taught, it wants kids to take the reins and create dynamic projects involving modeling. My students have embraced this new way of learning, we work to create stop motion videos on how electrons are transferred in ionic bonds, they work to design their own labs to test the amount of heat absorbed/resealed in reactions. I use small white boards constantly to have them illustrate concepts - but would love to have the neon markers and use their entire table top as a giant canvas for learning and modeling complex ideas. I am trying to change the way my students approach learning - its more about the process, than the answer. And slowly but surely they are getting there. By putting something as simple as a marker in their hands and making them create the concept map, an illustration or a stop motion video, they begin to see the value in the learning process and not just getting the right answer.

There is definitely a deficit in producing students that are truly college and career ready these days.

For years they have been trained to perform on standards based multiple choice tests. I cannot even count how many times a kid has said "but whats the answer?". I want this generation to see the value in the process, in thinking things through and fixing your mistakes. By giving them the tools they need to work as a team and solve problems, I hope to prepare them for the "real world".
