Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love science because they get to discover things first hand using recycled materials, food, and other stuff from my kitchen. But to help students turn wonder into lasting learning, they need one more thing: glue. Study guides and flashcards help them go from engaged to informed.
I teach science for 125 students in a low-income area.
A quarter of my students are special-ed and a quarter are learning English in ESL classes, so they really need to have extra time with vocabulary. That's where the art materials come in handy- for creating fun ways to really dig in to science words. Only a few children from each of my classes have glue or colored pencils from home. But they all love it when we use art materials to learn science in class. So you would really be helping students learn in a happy way if you donated to our class!
My Project
I don't have a problem motivating students to do labs. Everyone loves labs. Many of my students however, are wary of exams, or at least they were when I first met them. But last semester, I saw a dramatic improvement in students' exam scores when they practiced with flashcards and study guides. One of my students, L., quadrupled her initial scores. Another, J. went from F's to B's. My students think of the flashcards as games, and try hard to compete with one another. Students who have not been proud of their exams before become addicted to success and start to enjoy studying as well as the tangible parts of science class.
I have the world's most endearing, learning-est, cheerful students, and the world's emptiest glue bin.
I know glue is a boring, blah thing to donate, but you would be helping my kids make a ton of stuff to grow in confidence, skills, and knowledge! Thanks so much for reading about us and have an awesome day!
