GLOWing Together!

Help me give my students black lights, glow materials, and books as we learn and glow (grow) together in an inclusive classroom. These materials will encourage collaboration to solve problems and respect each others differences.

My Students

I teach reading to 107 fourth grade students. My students are from low income, high poverty. Eighty percent of our students are on free and reduced lunch. My students are adventurous, innovative, and compassionate. Despite the adversities they face in and out of school, they persevere academically.

A number of my students struggle with reading and perform on a 2nd grade level; this does not stop their drive and hard work.

My kids are very active students who love music, dancing, and moving through the classroom. They also love to solve problems and work hands on. These supplies will help promote a student centered classroom. It will also provide students with unique opportunities to become invested in their education.

My Project

My students inspire me to seek resources to enrich them. A huge focus this year has been to increase empowerment and respect towards each other. These glow materials and books are a great way to have students work together in a fun way out of their usual environment. Glowing together to read about diversity and solve problems about different cultures of the world. Students would attain glow glasses at a vision station to visualize another culture from their Point of View. Using glow materials, I hope to submerge students in learning hands on about respecting each others differences. The black lights will transform our classroom into a glowing classroom, simulating a change in civilization, allowing students with differences to communicate and work together. Students will learn how to respect each other with the book, Happy in Our Skin. Students will use flashlights to read this book in a glow-tastic cave then answer questions written in invisible ink.

At a time when, unfortunately, the lessons of tolerance still need to be learned, the book, Whoever You Are urges students to accept their differences, to recognize their similarities, and-most importantly-to rejoice in both.Every day all over the world, children are laughing and crying, playing and learning, eating and sleeping.

They may not look the same, or speak the same language. Their lives may be quite different, but inside, they are all alike. Stirring words and bold paintings weave their way around our earth, across cultures and generations. Students will put on their detective hats and solve puzzles about diversity using highlighters and jenga.

These glow materials and accessories are a captivating way to engage students on diversity. I want to provide my students with engaging learning opportunities that allow them to apply their learning and develop a connection despite their differences.
