This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hands-on laboratory activities and 21st century skills: that's what my biomedical students are interested in! I teach in a high school program where students are given opportunities to practice laboratory skills in the classroom related to biomedical careers.

Teaching in a Title I school where all students are on a free or reduced lunch, however, poses some challenges.

Many can't get to class on time because they have to help with siblings at home. Others have to take the train or multiple buses to get to school. One thing that encourages them to get to class, however, is a classroom that is interesting and career driven.

My Project

I know a refrigerator and a freezer don't exactly seem like typical classroom supplies, but in my classroom they are an absolute necessity!

My students are going to have the opportunity to create bacteria that glow in the dark by using the pipettes and micropipette tips to insert jellyfish DNA into bacterial DNA.

They are going to test the effectiveness of different sunscreens on yeast that are highly sensitive to UV light. How cool is that?

I suppose I could store the live bacteria and yeast in the refrigerator in the staff lounge. However, I'm pretty sure that would be highly frowned upon, unless I wanted to risk infecting every teacher on campus. This project is requesting one SPT upright freezer and a Frigidaire Compact refrigerator.
