Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Design and Engineering to an amazing, diverse group of ninth-grade students in Oakland, California. They are passionate, curious, and driven to succeed.
Even before the coronavirus forced us into months of distance learning, our students already knew that a school building does not define a school.
Throughout this year, we have overcome many challenges together, including a delayed construction project that kept us off-campus for the first week of school, and a building permitting battle that forced a mid-September move to another campus entirely.
Nevertheless, my students have demonstrated their resilience and their inspiring optimism through it all. As a school community, we have viewed these challenges as opportunities to truly live up our motto: "the city as our classroom." My students tackle big, important projects that are firmly rooted in the needs of our Oakland community, such as building tiny homes for homeless youth, building video game arcade cabinets that are accessible to people who use wheelchairs, and designing self-driving cars for senior citizens who can no longer drive themselves. My students know the value of learning by doing, and they never back down from a challenge.
My Project
Due to coronavirus and distance learning, our semester-long Design and Engineering group projects involving woodworking, graphic design, and coding had to be put on hold. I am using this new and unexpected online school model to transition my class from teacher-led projects to student-led passion projects.
Seven of my 55 ninth graders declared that they wanted to learn how to paint for their Passion Project, and in order to do that, they need basic painting supplies.
They have already learned fundamental illustration skills in our class, such as using a two-point perspective, understanding color theory, and creating compelling graphic layouts. These individual projects will help them "level up" their skills in a new medium while also giving them a creative, off-line outlet during these stressful and uncertain times. Some of these students are interested in selling their paintings to be able to help contribute financially to their families, as many of their parents have lost their jobs due to the pandemic.
I will be safely delivering kits of materials to each of my students so that they can finish the school year with a personally meaningful, hands-on design project, and I hope I can count on your support to make it happen!
