Globes Will Put the World at My Students' Fingertips!
Help me give my students the world at their fingertips! During remote social studies class, students utilized virtual resources to study national & international geography. Having a globe with each country delineated will vastly enrich their geographical understandings.
Our class is fantastic bunch. They are of Latino, African, and Afro-Caribbean descent and live in an economically disadvantaged part of Harlem, NYC.
Why am I seeking funds to purchase full-size political globes for my second graders?
During a very challenging year, my six fully remote second-graders have performed beautifully and worked really hard, especially in social studies. They have learned about the continents of Earth, and many of the states of the US and countries of the world that have been relevant to our lessons as well as to our own histories and lives. As a result, students have learned a great deal about the locations and political histories of various parts of the world.
However, all of this teaching and learning has been virtual, without my being able to use an actual globe, in person, to show students where on Earth the places are of which we speak and study. Google Earth has been amazing, but there is no substitute for a young person exploring a globe and using it for reference as their geographical understandings deepen and grow.
My Project
Given the constraints of remote learning, I have been impressed with the depth of geographic understanding that my second grade students have developed studying national and international geography this year in Social Studies. However, nothing beats holding a globe in your hands in order to conceive of our dynamic planet and all of the places that people and animals live the world over. Even when an in-person classroom has a globe for teaching and learning, each student having the opportunity to explore their own globe at home is an invaluable opportunity to observe and conceptualize the bodies of land and water on Earth.
