A strong science program in the early grades can lay the foundation for a lifetime of interest in explorations and discovery. I am striving to develop an atmosphere in my classroom where young children can develop a love of science as they become confident, content and at peace with themselves and the world. The children need to be aware of science and the importance of preserving our planet to the best of their abilities.
I am a pre-kindergarten teacher of 18 wonderful children in the Bronx. The children for the most part come from low income families who are struggling to make ends meet. Many of our families came to America from other countries to make a better life for themselves and their children. Our parents value education and I have found them to be supportive of my efforts.
I have chosen a few items from Lakeshore Learning to add to our science center. With liquid discovery tubes the children would see how liquids separate, learn about buoyancy, view water currents, and watch gravity in motion.
With a super snow classroom kit the children would be given the opportunity to explore texture, temperature, and absorption with incredible powder that looks and feels like real snow.
A space sand classroom kit would used for a hands-on science investigation. This amazing sand has the same properties as the soil on Mars, so it stays completely dry-even when it is immersed in water. It can be molded and formed into shapes underwater and then can be lifted out to be used again and again.
Grow in a day dinosaur plants are amazing plants that can live up to fifty years without water and they grow in a single day. These prehistoric plants come with a tray, lava plants and planting mix.
A classroom-safe science specimen set would introduce the children to living things right at their own fingertips. They are authentic specimens and completely unbreakable.
A magnetic board will give the children an opportunity to discover how animals use camouflage to adapt to their environment. The magnetic board has a wonderful detailed background, plus five miniature animals with built-in magnets-all sealed behind a safe acrylic window. The children will use a wand to move the animals into secret hiding places within each scene. The children will see how animals can easily blend into their environment.
Lastly, a Geodes discovery set are naturally formed geodes cut in half so that children can get an up-close look at the incredible crystals hidden inside. The set includes six unique pieces in a variety of shapes, colors and textures for the children to explore.
Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal. I am dedicated to teaching science to young children. All of the materials I have chosen include a balance of child-initiated activities, play and structured learning, optimizing each child's ability to succeed.
