My students are middle schoolers at a K-8 school in Redwood City. They are creative, hard-working and come from all walks of life. They love learning and their enthusiasm for education is inspiring to see. Since my students are becoming teenagers it is really exciting to see how they embrace their individuality, but also how they are fearless in the face of adversity. They want to stand up for what they believe in, they want to have their voices heard against racism, sexism and prejudice and they want to make a difference. Please help them recognize the power they have to lead this next generation!
My Project
This year my sixth graders are so excited to participate in the Global Read Aloud for the first time and read the book Refugee by Alan Gantz. The Global Read Aloud runs for a little over a month as thousands of teachers around the world read the same book and use literature to connect.
“The world will not be destroyed by those who do evil, but by those who watch them without doing anything.”
— Albert Einstein
As we read Refugee we are going to follow the refugee stories of the three main characters - one during the Holocaust, one fleeing Cuba and one, in recent -times escaping from Syria. We'll use our new notebooks to jot our thinking, our questions, and our connections to the text. I am also going to require each student to read one more book about a similar topic so I need to expand my classroom library of books about this topic. Students will be allowed to choose a book that interests them to further grow their background knowledge about students going through immigration and refugee experience. Our English class will be immersed in great conversation and literature as we become more aware of issues around the globe.
