Global Read Aloud: Perseverance and Hope

My students need a class set of Alan Gratz’s REFUGEE in order to participate in the 2018 Global Read Aloud.

My Students

My students are capable middle school learners in Southern California. Twenty five percent of my students do not have access to technology at home. We actively collaborate to ignite and explore curiosities with classroom tools to create the next generation of future ready learners. Together we deepen our knowledge as we look within to build kindness, compassion, and empathy.

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all,” champions Helen Keller.

For middle school students, their immediate surroundings create their scope of the world and what life has to offer. We expanded our point of view through literature when we are without a means for travel. A significant number of students live in barrios and/or multi-family households. Additionally, a compelling number of students are classified as special populations. Communal access to literature expands student opportunities to think beyond themselves in the here and now no matter their circumstances.

Our school serves approximately 750 students. While class sizes increase, we are in need of additional materials to support student learning.

My Project

We are in need of one complete class set of books (REFUGEE by Alan Gratz) in order to participate in the 2018 Global Read Aloud. This novel will be used to connect our students with students participating in schools all over the world. Six class periods of students will share their own stories of perseverance and hope using the book as a vehicle to make connections globally.

While examining the past, we will creatively problem solve via communication and collaboration using critical thinking.

By gaining insight, students will develop knowledge and increase understanding. They will link their learning across subjects such as history, health, and science. Technology in the classroom with further support sharing thoughts, ideas, and solutions. This class set of novels will enhance future ready learners evoking kindness, compassion, and empathy.
