My Students
A lot has changed in education, and is going to continue to change until we find ways to meet the needs of all students. One thing that has helped connect the real world to what students are learning about is through the reading of non-fiction text.
I teach in a Title 1 elementary school in North Carolina.
The students in my classroom aren't always exposed to current events, and don't have any idea of what goes on in the world around us. The exposure they get during the school day to non-fiction text, and the curriculum being taught is their window to the world. Through using non-fiction text that is interesting to them, and on their level, will help the students to become more aware of what is happening in our country, and the world around us. My students will benefit greatly from having exposure to such great materials.
My Project
In reading, I will be able to use the Time for Kids readers to meet with groups of children and teach reading strategies to help the students become better readers, while they are reading a text that is interesting and meaningful. Daily I meet with small groups of students, and to have the opportunity to share with them current events, ways to increase their comprehension, and using different reading strategies. Time for Kids readers will also help to have materials ready to use. Sometimes it is difficult to find non-fiction text on the students' level that will lend itself to being used for a reading lesson. Time for Kids would be a great addition to our classroom.
The impact that Time for Kids will have on my students is huge.
By having color copies of a current and interesting text for each the students to use will help the students maintain interest and focus in learning new and important reading strategies that will increase their comprehension and global awareness.
