My students need nine Deluxe Flask Tongs, Nesting Graduated Beaker sets, Wire Ring Supports, NarrowMouth Erienmeyer Flasks, and Unbreakable Graduated Cylinders.
Chemistry is an area of science that interests nearly all students. It also forms the basis of biology, geology, environmental science, and more. Hands-on lab activities let students to both develop an understanding of chemistry concepts, while building good safety and lab technique habits.
My school is in the East Bay region of California, so my kids are ethnically, linguistically, religiously, and culturally diverse.
Some of my kids are immigrants, coming from Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. What they have in common is intelligence, curiosity, and a desire to learn by doing. Please help me make chemistry come alive for them!
My Project
Chemistry is about the interactions of matter, space, and energy, and it involves lots of careful measuring; measuring of mass, volume, and temperature, among other things. These supplies will facilitate a variety of chemistry labs. The beakers and graduated cylinders are for measuring reactants and products. The ring-stand parts and tubing will allow me to rehabilitate our ethane-burning heat sources, and the forceps and flasks will give students a safe way to handle hot materials.
Some areas of science, like astronomy, seismology, and particle physics, don't lend themselves easily to hands-on experimentation in a middle school setting... but chemistry does!
Chemistry gives us the underlying concepts that we need to explain ideas in geology, astronomy, biology, and many areas on engineering. Chemistry labs give kids a chance to see how molecule-scale concepts play out with visible-scale substances, all while developing habits of safety, accuracy, and technique. Understanding chemistry is central to success in the sciences. Please help me provide my kids with the materials they need to get a great start!
