My students are always the first set of smiles that I see walking towards me and are always eager to get to school in the morning. They come in with the willingness to work hard and an enthusiasm for learning.
School should not just be a place for my students to learn about academics, but to learn about themselves.
I work in a school that has a high level of poverty. Eighty five percent of the students in my school receive free or reduced price breakfast/lunch. Most of my students come from a background of trauma and require not only academic support, but social and emotional support throughout the day. My goal is to make their school experience meaningful and fun while also setting high expectations for all of my students.
I want to prepare them for the next steps in their lives and also teach them that anything is possible if they set their mind to it and work hard!
My Project
In our classroom we have many students that need extra support and strategies to learn English.
While learning strategies used in Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD) are helpful for all students, they are especially helpful for students learning a new language.
These strategies include creating paragraphs together using sentence strips, color coding information, and allowing for group work using posters. These supplies will help the students in my classroom have access to these strategies and incorporate them into all content areas. They will enhance the lessons I teach and allow more students to actively participate in the learning taking place.
