"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." At our elementary school, we embrace this precept from Benjamin Franklin as students and teachers work together as a community of learners. As a STEAM instructor, I facilitate real world challenges for students in grades three through five. This program allows children from all backgrounds to explore their innate abilities while being makers and problem solvers.
Naturally curious and eager to engage, my students tackle new challenges and experiences with enthusiasm and critical thinking.
They are digital natives with a knack for using technology. I am continually impressed that, when faced with solving a real-world problem, how they design practical solutions with empathy. We call our STEAM classroom the SmartLab. Students regularly spend extra time in the room going above and beyond to explore their interests and their passions. Their enthusiasm for learning is infectious!
My Project
The materials I am requesting will become part of a robust STEM experience. The littleBits Gizmos and Gadgets kit will be used to add to a maker experience as they are challenged to improve the classroom/school environment. Students identify ways to improve the classroom by empathizing. Students will then design, create, test, improve, and finally share their creations as they pitch their inventions to a panel of mock investors - a la "Shark Tank" style.
The 5 c's: creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, content, and communication define the philosophy of our STEM program.
These materials will be put to good use as we inspire students to be designers, makers, and thinkers. Thank you for your support in enhancing our learning environment. It is greatly appreciated!
