it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students asking to see themsevles in the AP Classroom Literature.
My AP Literature students are thoughtful, passionate readers who care deeply about seeing themselves represented in the stories we study.
Many of them identify as LGBTQ+, and they specifically requested Giovanni’s Room because they want to engage with literature that reflects their experiences and challenges them intellectually.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room. This novel is a classic of world literature and a powerful exploration of identity, love, and belonging. Including it in our AP classroom will allow my students to:
Analyze Baldwin’s masterful prose and literary techniques.
Discuss themes of love, loss, identity, and societal expectations.
Connect with characters whose experiences resonate with their own lives.
The Impact
Having a full class set ensures that every student has access to the same text. Representation matter when students see their experiences reflected in literature, they feel validated, heard, and included. This project gives my students the opportunity to engage with an AP-level text they specifically requested, enriching both their literary understanding and their sense of belonging in our classroom.
