Giving the World to Students: Making Effective Connections With Technology

My students need an updated touchscreen computer and iPad to allow them to use technology like other students their age. They will be able to freely communicate, interact, and connect with the world around them.

My Students

It doesn't take long for anyone who enters my classroom to see that my students are special in so many ways! You instantly become hooked by their charm, fight for life and expression. They may not be born with the capability to physically see or speak, but they are determined to reach out to the world to make themselves heard and seen. They all possess an outstanding determination to learn and adapt. Our class has a wide range of students varying in ability levels. Some are non-verbal, non-ambulatory, where some are active chatterboxes.

Whatever their abilities, our class is filled with fun-loving, learning driven students.

My room is never boring and is always filled with such memorable characters. After spending at least three years with the same students, you tend to form a unique bond with each one.

My Project

My exceptional students need an updated touchscreen computer that will enable them to benefit and enjoy technology like other students their age. They will be able to independently communicate, interact, and connect with the world around them in a way they haven't been able to before. Like most children in 3rd through 5th grade, they enjoy playing on computers, tablets, and socializing with their friends. We also integrate technology in my classroom to facilitate student learning. My students require multiple modes of instructional delivery as it takes 3 times the exposure to generalize a specific skill than their grade level peers.

Utilizing this technology will foster a level of independence they often do not have the luxury of experiencing on a daily basis.

Having a computer with a touchscreen will empower my students who struggle with the motor function to manipulate a computer-mouse. Giving them this independence will also foster a level of pride in their work and bolster a sense of accomplishment and success in school.They will be able to test and independently complete assignments on the computer. This year state testing is being administered on the computer. Having a computer with touchscreen capabilities will enable my students to complete the newly updated and challenging State Assessment seamlessly.
